SOKRAKI

Sokraki, CorfuThe traditional village of Sokraki is located on the island of Corfu, at an altitude of 440 meters and has a magnificent view of the Ionian Sea and Corfu town.

The beautiful natural environment surrounding the village, with varied vegetation all year round, is ideal for hiking, for nature lovers and beyond. But its geographical location gives it the rare advantage of having a panoramic view in two directions. From one side of the village we can admire Corfu town, with its harbor and its fortresses, and when the sky is clear we can see the southern tip of the island of Paxos. From the other side of the village, we can see the distant islands of Othoni, Erikousa and Mathraki.

The traditional houses of the village, the cobblestone streets and the entrance balconies take us back in time. The village still retains traditional mills and cafeterias, two beautiful squares and four churches.

The largest church in the village is the church of Hypergia Theotokos Perivoliotissa, a three-aisled basilica of the 16th century, which was rebuilt in 1930. The church celebrates with a traditional feast on August 15th. Agios Spiridon is a one-room basilica of the 18th century, which has been rebuilt while preserving its traditional bell tower. Agia Varvara is a small temple located between Sokraki and the neighboring village of Zygos. Finally, St. Nicholas of Mavriana is, unfortunately, a dilapidated temple, but it has impressive frescoes.

Two other older temples which nowadays can unfortunately only be found as ruins, are the church of Agios Vlasios, which existed just outside the village, and the Byzantine church of Agios Theodoros, which existed on the road to Valanio near the ruins of Paleokastro.

Starting from the village, there are many hiking routes. You can choose either the route to Pylaia, which is 620 meters high and has a magnificent view of North Corfu and the Diapontia islands, either the route to Ano Korakiana or Spartila to enjoy the view of Corfu town, its fortresses and the small islands located just outside the city: Vido and Lazareto.

The hiking paths are rich in vegetation, with the most common trees being the holly, the oak trees and the cypresses, and of course the olive trees, the traditional tree of Corfu. You will encounter gorges and torrents, such as Melissoudi, stone bridges and ravines, such as the Devedeos and Rousellas wells.

Sokraki is an alternative vacation choice, where you will combine the island holidays with the nature and the beauty of the mountain, all in a traditional village of Corfu with magnificent views, in a climate of absolute calm and relaxation.
